A Residence Steeped in History

Built in the 17th century, La Porte Noire originally served as a waystation for travellers and merchants, when coal mining and textiles were flourishing industries in the region. During the Franco-Austrian wars of the 18th century, the house was reportedly used as an outpost for Austrian troops before falling under Napoleonic rule.

The rise of coal mining in the 19th century dramatically transformed the region. The vast underground tunnels excavated beneath the house gradually caused subtle subsidence, giving the manor a gentle tilt that remains visible to this day. It is said that, at certain times, a marble placed on the floor would slowly roll to one side of the room – a silent witness to the intensive mining operations below.

During World War II, La Porte Noire played a crucial role as a hiding place for downed British airmen, providing them with shelter before their escape to safer territories. In the post-war years, the house became a home to multiple mining families, accommodating up to ten families at a time in the 1950s and 60s.
